Stiles, NDP stand in solidarity with First Nations

QUEEN'S PARK - Leader of the Official Opposition NDP Marit Stiles and Deputy Leader Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong), Critic for Indigenous and Treaty Relations, issued a joint statement condemning Premier Ford's outright refusal to engage in meaningful meeting with First Nations Chiefs regarding issues that directly affect their lands and waters:

"The Ford Government has a nasty track record of sidestepping due process and bulldozing their way through decisions without regard for the voices of Ontarians and First Nations," said Stiles. "This is not how you govern. It’s a divisive tactic undermining First Nation rights. We understand the significance of mining and its role in the province's growth, but this government’s approach puts it all at risk. We cannot move forward and build a prosperous future unless we uphold the principles of free, prior, and informed consent."

Yesterday, First Nations Chiefs united in solidarity, gathering at Queen's Park to invite Premier Doug Ford to meet with them to discuss extraction projects affecting their lands and waters. Ford and his Conservative government were a no-show. During the gathering, Indigenous voices shared stories of the lasting effects of past mining without consultation, including individuals living with long-term impacts such as mercury poisoning in their systems.
